My son has a Compaq SR1703WM computer. It has a AMD sempron 1.8 CPU. I want to upgrade it to a x64 CPU and I know that the 939 CPU's are kind of out dated but I would like to get his computer to play the games he likes for a while longer, until I can save up for a new system. Now, the problem I have is that I was told that the Compaq computer was a stoke job and there was no way I could change the CPU out. I didn't understand this, it makes no sence to me. If the MB is a socket 939 and I upgrade to a socket 939 CPU why can't i do this? Does anyone know if this MB will not let you upgrade or if my local computer shop[ tech guy is just trying to sell me a motherboard too? Thank you very much for your help on this.
Well, You can upgrade the CPU, but all motherboards have limitations, You can upgrade this, but to what extent...idk http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00496280&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=1831241 The link above is a HP/compaq page of supported CPUs, for your Motherboard. and every bit of info on your board. Verify that everything is correct, and choose a cpu from the compatability list and rock on.
