Antec P180 loud?

#1 12 Dec 2007 @ 20:35
Hey guys i recently bought an antec p180 because its recommended for being a silencing case.

But for some reason it's just as loud as my knock off school cheapy case!!

Im baffled 'cos my brother has exactly the same case and there's no noise from his! I have to check the blue LED just to know it was actually running.

Any help will be appreciated :S

Your fans are set to the high setting probably, turn them down to low!

Lol, I had them on low already but still to no avail :S

That does sound odd. What other components are in your case?
As a PC silencing enthusiast I'm happy to help you get your PC quiet. Have you just moved your parts to this case, or is it a new build? If so, it might not be the P180 that's loud. What is the loudest noise the PC makes, what sort of noise is it?

Umm, I have:

Genuine Intel 2160 1.8GHz Dual Core

ASUS P5L 1394 Socket 775, Intel™ Pentium™ Motherboard

Hard Drives:
-Hitachi Deskstar 250gig
-WDC 120gig

Graphics Card
NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT

Dvd Drives
Philips DVDR1648P1
Samsung SH-D162C

I use the standard fans provided but even then I thought it should be relatively silent, but I can confidently say that it's too loud, as if there's no improvement at all.

Thanks for any advice!

You're using an 8500GT. They typically have very loud fans, I think that's your problem. if you have a stock CPU cooler, that'll also be quite noisy, and your Hard disks don't look like brand new models, so they'll also make a bit of a racket. The quietness of your PC is let down by your internal components, not your case. What power supply are you using?

I use a OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

Lol, thanks, so I guess my components are the main culprits to the noise :S

Heh, the StealthXstream isn't exactly silent, but it's no noisier than the case fans on low I wouldn't have thought. You need to either change your graphics card or put an aftermarket cooler on the 8500GT, that'll get rid of a lot of the noise, get a low noise CPU cooler for your CPU, then you can deal with the hard disks how you see fit. To be honest in a P180 those drives probably won't be a problem.

Yeah ok, I'll take your advice and see what I can do to make my PC quieter.

Thanks for the help!

No problem. For reference I highly recommend Thermalright heatsinks for cooling pretty much anything silently, I use an Ultra 120 on my CPU and an HR-03 on my graphics card, using Scythe case fans. The only audible parts of my PC are the PSU and hard drives. The CPU and GPU are completely inaudible.

Wow thanks, yeah I'll have a look for them.

To makes things better or worse depending how you see it, I just found out that I don't have the P180 but the P182

Thanks for the help!

That makes things much better. The P182 is far better at silencing than the P180. The P182 is an excellent case.
