Thornfr,
I wrote an article about the unit, including all the needed links and such, but the website seems to be down at the moment. I'll post the relevant data you've requested sometime tomorrow. I'm supposed to go out to a function, so if I can't get to it during the day, or if the site is still down, I'll post everything later tomorrow night, as soon as I can get to it.

Hey Snapok,
Don't worry about it, all is forgiven.
Again, it is very important to note that PAL is not a region, it's a video standard. The player will play PAL discs without a hiccup... as will your computer. It's just the strength of a more powerful processor to do the video conversion.
Think of region code as more of a "copy protection" type of device. Region codes are simply meant to prevent people from importing discs from other countries before the DVD is actually released in their country. I can't emphasize enough that it's not related to NTSC or PAL in any way.
So it sounds like you have no worries. If your discs are region free, they will definitely play on this player.
Authoring DVD's is easy... When you come to the fork in the road, just make sure and take it.

Snapok-
Quote: when you say strength of a more powerful processor to do the video conversion did you mean that this dvd doesnt have a powerful processor?
Not at all. Most DVD players won't do PAL to NTSC conversion but this one does.
Quote: another question i have is can i burn SVCD or divx on my laptop? how can i do that if i can?
SVCD... I'm not even going to touch that one, unless you are referring to downloaded files. I have thrown all manner of downloaded files at this player and haven't had a problem with it playing back yet. Same goes for Divx. If you have a problem with Divx files, then you need to read the rest of this thread to find out if your files are encoded using the proper codec.
You should burn your files as a data disc using whatever burning app you have, and they *should* play on this player.
However, please reference videohelp.com for more info, this is sort of beyond the scope of this thread.

Here's the answer on PAL DVD's. I just got back from Las Vegas and I have a "Video Postcard" from there. It happens to have NTSC on one side and PAL on the other. EXACT same content on both sides.
I live in the USA and I am playing this on a Panasonic 50" flatscreen which (the TV) does not support PAL. The DVP642 is set to NTSC not Multi.
I just watched both.
Result...no noticable difference.
Hope this answers the question.

Just got DVP642 today, seems to be playing divX just fine. Having trouble with a DVD-R I burned, but my Sony was a cranky about playing it too.
Philips seems to have redesigned their website and I can't find the newest firmware now. Anyone got a good link to it, or can post it for download?
Thanks!

Hmm. It doesn't seem able to play PAL SVCDs correctly.
Video: 25 fps, 480x576 MPEG2 1834 Kbps avg bitrate
Audio: 44KHz, 224 Kbps MP2
Fairly typical PAL SVCD. Comes out quite scrambled on my Sony Wega. Tried NTSC, PAL (nothing on straight PAL, which was to be expected) and Multi. NTSC and Multi played about the same.
It actually looked like a badly scratched DVD - Very pixellated and a little skippy, and then just stopped. I tried burning just the MPG files to a DVD+RW - same thing. I tried burning the SVCD to a CD - same thing. I'm certain it wan't the quality of the optical media, as I used the same DVD+RW a few minutes later for a DivX backup I made, and it worked fine. The SVCD plays fine on my PC (of course).

Through much of the conversation between snapok and estebbins, I feel my inquiry may have gone overlooked and I'd like to bring it up again.
I consolidated my DVDs into a DivX movie server. To preserve the 5.1 surround sound, all of my DivX movies are encoded with the AC3 sound track that I Demux off the original DVDs. For some freakesh reason, everytime I try to play these DivX files on my DVP642, the unit locks up! However, when I encode DivX with mp3 sound track, I have no problem playing them on the DVP642. I am wondering if I am improperly demuxing the AC3 from the DVD. Is there anyone who has created DivX with AC3 from a DVD and is able to play it on DVDP642? If so, would you mind enlightening me on your process? Thanks much.

Hi there everyone. I just bought this player today, and I'm loving it so far!
I just have a few questions though regarding this player and certain DivX files.
One of the AVI files I played had perfect picture, but the sound kept skipping. Is this a problem with the CD, the encoding, or the player itself? Anybody else got this problem?
Also, I noticed that there's a 642/17 model and a 642/32 model. Mine is 642/17. Is there a difference between the two? Someone on this forum said that there isn't, but then why would Philips name the other model a 642/32 then?
Thanks for all the help guys!

minashin,
I have exactly the same problem and would appreciate your help should you find the answer elsewhere (and I'll do the same)
The AVI I have a problem with is Divx encoded and when played on a pc is great - as soon as it is played on the DVP642 is skips in certain parts of the movie and also appears to misalign the sound with the picture. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.

Audio Format: MPEG Layer-3

Thanks a lot for the help.

Wow, amazing! The GKnot method helped me solved my problem and what a hard way around to figuring this one out! After encoding Passion of the Christ using the GKnot method, I burned the AC3 DivX file to an RW just encase it didn't work. The moment I press play on my dvp642, (Wallah!) I knew it was going to work; why? becuase it said "Reading Indexes..." Woohoo, I'm so happy. Downside...What am I going to do with the other 200 AC3 divx movies; I'm I going to have to re-encode them using the GKnot method? Hell NO, I've gotta look further. I started comparing the the GKnot method to the CladDVD method that I'm used to. I found that GKnot method did not specify audio interleaving. When unspecified, audio interleaving is default at Preload audio 500ms and interleave audio at every 1 frame. What I have learned from CladDVD was to interleave audio every 500ms instead of by frames. This method was to help maintain audio synch. I thought to myself, okay, let me re-run one of my existing AC3 DivX movie (Hellboy) that won't play on the dvp642 through VirtualDub using direct stream copy and audio interleave at every 1 frame. Re-burned the movie on an RW and for heavensakes, I've got my 5.1 channel while watching divx on my dvp642!!!

pvolpe and minashin:
Your info seems pretty much the same except for a few differences; and those differences are not of any great significance. Since you have video, you're doing something right. I would focus on how you are encoding and interleaving the audio.
1. Are you encoding the within VirtualDub or elsewhere?
2. What is your audio interleaving configuration?
I'm thinking that mp3's are so compacted that if you did not change your audio interleaving from the default settings, the dvp642 may have a harding time combining the tiny bits and pieces of the mp3 file from the large number of frames that you have in your movie. Considering that an average movie is about 150,000 frames and the mp3 audio is about 100mb, the average size of the parsed mp3 is only 683 bytes. Maybe I'm thinking out of my butt. However, if you two haven't already tried, I'd suggest setting your audio interleaving like this:
Preload 500ms audio before video start (this is the default setting) and interleave audio every 500ms. Be sure to 'tick' the ms radio button. If you've already tried this then sorry I wasn't helpful.

I have another question.
When burning DivX movies, is there a particular speed I should be burning at for the DVP642/17 model?
Thanks again for all the help.

I burn dvds at 8x speeds and it plays perfectly fine on this phillips player. If you buy those 4x speeed Great Quality brand from Fry's and your burner says it can burn it at 8x be sure to throttle your burner back to 4x. I forgotten that I had a pack of cds which were 4x and was burning at 8x and got some interesting but unsatisfactory results.
