trying to copy some mkv files to dvd but when loaded in the program it does not recognize the subtitles. do you have to download and add your own subs to these files or is their a way to make the program recognize the subtitles that are their when the file is played? thanks for any help your time is greatly appreciated
If you load the .MKV into 'VirtualDubMod', click 'Streams', 'Streamlist' , highlight the particular subtitle stream and click 'Demux', it will save the sub as a .srt file. It's because all the features that are available to MKV files are not yet supported by the converter.
stuck the file in the program and it popped up this error: couldn't locate decompresser for format yyyy (unknown) virtualdub requires a video for windows(vfw)compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable. only 'direct stream copy' is available for this video. will this error affect anything with the subs? program will allow me to view the streams but it says there is two:[S_TEXT/ASS], [S_Text/UTF8] what is the diff or does it even matter?
Since you are only demuxing the subs, the warning message does not apply. Probably find that the utf8 stream is a non-Latin alphabet (perhaps arabic?). Demux both and open them in Notepad to find out.

The UTF8 file probably, but it may be best to load the file into Notepad and change the encoding to 'ANSI' before saving.. The other file could be changed to the .srt format usign freeware 'Subtitle Workshop' EDIT:corrected image.
tried changing the encoding to ansi but the program wouldn't except the subs that way so I just put them in how they were. During the encoding process it kept saying it was having an error with streams #.o1 and #.o2. Went ahead and copied it to a dvd but when it played everyting seemed to be there it just skips every half sec. could this be do to the error or to the memorex media that i used didn't want to waste good media on a test run.
Stream 1 and 2 are the Video and Audio. Tell ConvertX not to burn a DVD. Use the output folder that it creates to test the output files with the media player on the PC. If the output works (and the subs work), burn the folder with ConvertX. Set the burning speed to 4x, if the problem persists, try 'Verbatim' in preference to Memorex.
ran the video from the computer output file in the media player, but the skipping is still present in the video. Do you have any idea as to what the problem could be? thanks for the help
I can't say why ConvertX is having the problem, but it goes back to the point that it doesn't full support MKV. Try DVD Flick to convert the file to DVD. It will accept MKV and you can add a .srt subtitle after loading the video, by clicking 'Edit Title'. But note that I have seen audio and video going out of sync after conversion of MKV with a couple of encoders, which I haven't seen with ConvertX.. http://www.dvdflick.net/
dvd flick works out great, I was wandering is virtualdubmod the best way to extract subs from mkv files as .srt file or is their a better program once again thanks for all of your help
