Ive been wanting a gaming computer for quite sometime now. I want to know if this would be a good gaming computer and if the parts are all compatible with each other. Im also not quite sure what to get as the power supply. Looks good, the mobo and cpu are compatable with each other, but the ram is 2GB DIMMs each, which would not perform as high as if you got 4x1GB DIMMs. These are the same type, but different (and still reliable) company and cheaper too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220267 Also, the 8600 isnt that great of a video card for gaming. I would consider it to be a low-mid PSU. The 8800GT would complete a gaming PC since you have a nvidia chipset which works best with nvidia graphics cards (SLi). For a power supply, you need to get something that is very reliable. Most people skimp out on PSUs and buy cheaply made ones from Rosewill or other companies, but the reality is that most cheap PSUs dont even put out half the amount of power they're supposed too. You've massively undersold yourself on the graphics. The 8600GT is not a gaming graphics card. Go for something like this instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102713 As for the power supply, get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139001&Tpk=CMPSU-520HX Corsair is generally better rated RAM than Patriot, and because it's a two stick configuration rather than four 1GB sticks, it would be better to stick with what you outlined, rather than what Waymon suggested. You will also need: DVD drive Hard disk drive Case and any peripherals you wish to replace.
is ati better then nvidia? i was told nvidia was the way to go. and that was from a guy that went to college for computers.
Not from what I read. Most boards have issues with overclocking four sticks of RAM, and I believe there's also a performance hit from it. Then again that may just be my experience with my shoddy old P5N-E. DDRgod: The guy who "goes to college for computers", which doesn't actually require any market knowledge of computer components, is a retard. Both brands produce decent products, and you should always be happy to consider either. As it stands at the moment, I usually recommend the HD3870 to people for high end gaming builds, simply because they offer so much more new technology to people.
Well currently I would say nvidia has the upper hand. However, when it comes to the nvidia 8800GT vs the Ati 3870, although the 8800GT has better performance I would go with the 3870 because it has a much better picture quality. Ati sometimes has driver issues with their cards, but a update will sometimes fix them.
"upper hand"? How so? The performance of the 8800GTS G92 and 8800GTX is somewhat elevated, but not hugely so over the 3870. Granted, it's a noticeable difference, but I wouldn't say nvidia have the upper hand until they make something as fast as the new GTS that has DX10.1 and SM4.1
Well yes thats true, but in benchmarks like 3dmark06 the 8800GT does pull an extra 1000 points over the 3870, and it shows in other games like World in conflict.
ugh another problem guys -_- the motherboard i have doesnt support pci express 2.0 only x16. I did see on some motherboads that pci express 2.0 and x16 were on the same line together. so are they the same thing then???
You shouldn't worry about PCIe 2 any time soon. PCIe 16x has plenty of bandwidth left in it for new tech! Believe it or not, even at only 4x speed, you only lose around 20% of your performance with top end cards.
ok so if i buy this graphics card? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150259 (yea i decided to go with nvidia because i've always ever used it) with an interface of PCIE 2.0, it will work on the motherboard's PCIE x16? also would this computer be referred as a "high end" pc? what types of games would this system be capable of running smoothly on? you guys make it seem like theres a complete difference between 8600 and 8800....well yea i guess 100-200 bucks more is a pretty big difference but will it really be THAT much better getting an 8800 over a 8600??
Yes, that card will work with all motherboards with PCI-e 16x. It can play any game out there, including Crysis (not on very high, but on high) with ok fps since there is no card that can play that game with great (60+) fps. Well there is a big difference between a 8800GT and a 8600. Here you can see a 50fps increase from the GT over the 8600 Overall the GT is way better than the 8600
Lol all I see is the Tom's hardware logo, not the graph! The 8800GT is an excellent performing card, but for gaming, the Radeon HD3870 is a far better choice. You'd be losing out going for the 8800.

That's correct, but don't be fooled. The extra performance from the 8800GT is not that great. In most games it isn't even noticeable. It's for this reason that I typically recommend the HD3870 over the 8800GT.
