I've been looking around for a external hard drive for my pc but cant seem to find any good ones. Whenever I come across one that sounds goods (good features) I get put off by all the bad reviews. And that with ALL external hard drives i've looked at. I must have looked at ALL the big brands for a external hard drive but cant find one that got good reviews. Can you guys help? Im looking for at least 400gb and my price range is upto £80
Seagate and Western Digital are both good. Keep in mind that unhappy customers are more unlikely to write reviews than satisfied ones (and scalding ones at that). There's always the chance you'll get screwed by any brand or unit, but in general those are good bets. I had a Lacie that died on me, so that's the brand I personally hate.
LaCie are actually one of the best brands of external hard drives.... :S The best solution of all is to make one yourself. Buy an internal PC hard drive (I recommend the Western Digital WD5000AAKS) and use an IcyBox IB-351 external enclosure for it.
Ok i've narrowed the hard drives to one of these... Western Digital My Book 500gb Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500gb Freecom Classic SL HardDrive 500GB USB-2 Freecom External Network HDD 250GB USB2.0 LAN NAS Drive Maxtor 500GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive Lacie Desktop Drive 500Gb Could someone tell me which one of these would be the best to get. These are the ones I found, If you know/got a better one please lemme know. I dont know this is really needed but, Im gonna be using the drive A LOT, Gonna be using uTorrent etc to download straight to the external drive.
Nice enclosure, but tough to find, unless you live in the UK. This one seems to be a good enclosure. It is for SATA drives. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817198004
What's this then? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817714019 But no, I agree, I hadn't considered the supply of IcyBoxes being low in the US since they're so incredibly popular over here.
ok now your all just confusing me. So should I get an external enclosure or a external hard drive? And whats so good about the icybox enclosure? Which one would be most safe? I wanna store data that is important so I dont want one that dies on me
The DIY approach is safer, but there's no way of guaranteeing your data will never be lost, save if you setup a RAID array, but let's not get into that.
I ordered the one that I posted, earlier. It is for SATA drives and has firewire and USB connections. I hope that it will work well with the laptop that I got my wife, for Christmas. The laptop has a firewire port, along with 3 or 4 USB ports.
