Vista has built in drivers for more hardware than XP does. XP may require you to find a driver off the manufacturer's website.

Also your windows vista is probably a recovery disk which will include ALL the drivers you need. Try finding it on the internet, the emachines site will only have vista drivers.

why use usb cable on the modem as ethernet cable is better & don't need a driver except for the network card.

Hmm, I didn't consider the fact that it might have an ethernet port, hats off for the research. Yeah, use ethernet if you're able.

Did you actually install a network driver when using XP? You'll need one to be able to use the modem over ethernet.

In this case it's not the modem you need the driver for, it's your motherboard chipset. You'll need to find out what motherboard is in your PC and go to the manufacturer's website.

Yep, they may have a separate Network driver, or you may just have to get the whole chipset driver package.

i am reading up on the specs on the pc now an it says it comes with a network card ethernet 10/100.
the only problem am having trouble finding is the bran of the motherboard. so i can go visit the website

That's the integrated graphics driver, required to get decent video performance.
