I'm trying to split this DVD rip I have into 2 parts so that it can fit on 2 (S)VCDs. When I opened up VirtualDub and loaded the AVI file, this message popped up: And I'm trying to split the AVI file according to this guide, which requires Direct Stream Copy mode: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/cut_avi_with_virtualdub.cfm Should I go through with the splitting anyways or will the sound be out of sync? If so, what can I do to ensure that the sound remains intact? Any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated! Btw, I already tried splitting using a program called Video Convert/Split/Merge Studio, but the sound was off on the files I ended getting after splitting.
Acknowledge the message then go ahead and split the file, then check each section for sync. If it's out of sync, do the following to convert the VBR audio to CBR: Install the Lame mp3 codec. Load the original file into VirtualDub Click 'OK' at the message. Click 'Audio'. 'Full Processing Mode' 'Compression' 'No Compression' 'OK' Click 'File' > 'Save WAV' - give it a name and save it. Click 'Audio' > 'WAV Audio' and load the WAV that you saved. Under Audio, click 'Compression' and select 'Lame MP3'. You are offered a menu reflecting the original sampling rate, so choose either 41000,128,cbr stereo or 48000,128,cbr stereo and 'OK'. Under 'Video', choose 'Direct Stream Copy'. Under 'File' 'Save as AVI' - give it a new name. Exit VirtualDub, and restart it and load the new file. Since the audio is now CBR, there should be no message, proceed per the guide. These codecs can be uninstalled through the Control Panel. Or, you could simply use Nandub instead of Virtualdub, which instantly has no problems handling vbr. There are now 3 platforms emulating Avery Lee's original Virtualdub: 1. Virtualdub (not what you are using from what I can tell of your screenshot) 2. VirtualdubMod (what you are using based on your screenshot); and 3. Nandub: exactly identical to #1 above, except some altered functionality to do with audio formats and encoding. Keep your VirtualdubMod, but you should also download and use Nandub for .vbr. Thanks for the quick reply. The tutorial is on joining/merging multiple files using VirtualdubMod. The original post was about splitting a single file into pieces. The best answer for that application is not VirtualdubMod, it is Nandub. Nandub is based on the original Virtualdub client just like VirtualdubMod is, only it will not ask to rewrite headers. It will simply behave as VirtualdubMod would had the file contained cbr audio. Why jerk around with VirtualdubMod? Personally, I have both VdubMod and Nandub. I always use Nandub 100% of the time, unless I run into an occasional file it has problems with (MKV, Ogg: things that only VdubMod supports). Then, in those rare instances, I dust off the otherwise frivolous and useless VdubMod and use it. Of a given set of files acquired, Nandub will split 97/100 without problems. Use VdubMod for the other 3. Alternatively, stick with VdubMod, and face a ratio of more like 63/100 files trouble free, or less. Vbr is the most common encoding of audio. Use Nandub for this reason.
Forgot... Nandub is probablya superior solution for file merging/joining, though I don't do as much of that as I do splitting, in which case it is definitely superior.
