One quick suggestion: break into Grub while you're booting, and you'll need to do a live edit on your grub script. I think you need to hit 'E' on the main Ubuntu entry, and delete out "splash" (note that this isn't permanent). Or something to that effect, the bottom of the screen usually tells you your options. If it works, once you boot into Ubuntu, you'll want to "sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst" and make it permanent, and just put up with not having a splash screen. I find not turning the computer off in the first place makes sure it isn't an issue ;)

Have you tried the Ubuntu forums? They'd probably be able to help you a lot more than the 2-3 regulars that hang around here. As a starting point, which release are you using? 7.10 (Gutsy), 7.4 (Feisty) or something different? Sometimes releases will have quirks that will be fixed by a later relase or that have worked their way in to a new release (my PC wouldn't boot 7.10 but would boot 7.4, the laptop wouldn't boot 7.4 but would boot 7.10).
