Quality Problems Please Help

I just bought a Sony Bravia KLV-32U300A LCD TV, and connected my dvd player and played some of my DVD's and the quality was really bad. But then I read the manual where they said to connect the cables through component and after that their was a massive improvement in quality. But, there was also and HDMI connection in the TV as well, and after researching on the internet I found that through HDMI is the way to get the optimum performance on display. But then I found out that my regular dvd player did NOT have a HDMI connection, so I bought the Panasonic DMR-EH67, which boasted 1080p upconversion. So after connecting that to my TV, I set the upscaling to 1080p and played some of my DVD's and their was a slight but perceptible improvement in quality. But, in some scenes pixelation can be seen.
Is it because the DVD's are in standard quality? Or should I tweak my TV or Panny player?

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Theoretically, but in the real world many have found component provides a better result.

A lot of variables here. Are these burns or originals? Have you tried the Panny at all resolutions and also with component to see if the pixelation remains the same?

The DVD'S are all original. Some in region 3 and Some in region 1 (standard dvd's), and no I haven't tried it at all resolutions. Am I much better off buying a HD DVD player which has better upscaling?

Upconverting 480 to 1080p is a lot. Most experts ( from The Perfect Vision, Home Theater Magazine) say upconvertat most to 1080i. At the high ranges of upconversion, pixillation is commonly seen. Solution is a better upconverter as the one in the Oppo dvd player line, or if you can afford it, a Dragonfly unit by Algolith.

Thanks guys for your replies. I decreased the resolution to 580p and the pixelation did go away. The picture is good, but not great. But I'll have to deal with it, cause even at 720p the pixelation is still there. Anyway thanks.
