I'm sure you'll lose the warranty as for updating, your guess is as good as mine.

You wont lose the warranty, as its just firmware and nothing is opened. If you do a restore through Itunes your jailbreak is gone. You will be able to update to later firmwares, but will have to wait for a new jailbreak... for example ipod 1.1.2 uses a different process to jailbreak to 1.1.2. Just so you know in my mind, jailbreaking is a waste of time. I found there was no apps or games worth while. Just my opinion.

well if you take a jailbroken ipod into the store, no duh you will lose the warranty... if you have any problems just restore and you are fine. but try to get firmware jailbroken into 1.1.2 it runs faster and does not crash as much. but once you update, you lose the jailbrokenness... unless you prep it of course

Just don't jail break it. There are many benifits to gain from just using the normal Apple Firmware such as apps like monkey ball and Midomi

If you jailbreak your iPod and something happens to it because of the jailbreak, you can restore it in iTunes and you get the latest Apple firmware. If everything goes fine and you jailbroke your iPod, say on 2.1, you can upgrade to 2.2 but you'll have to wait until a new jailbreak is available for 2.2 (there is a jailbreak available for 2.2, it was just an example).

Also, if you can an iPod touch, it can't be the 2nd generation one because those aren't jailbreakable. You can only jailbreak the iPhone 3G, the original iPhone and the iPod touch (first generation).
