could someone help me with setting up static ip for playing lan games. also will it make a difference? i have an issue with playing lan games. they tend to slow down. in other words not being in real time. we both can play the game without a problem on single player. it dont slow down. when it comes to playing lan it lags. one has a PD 3.0 overclocked to 3.6 with aftermarket cooler. i have a core 2 duo 2.1 at stock speeds. What could be the issue?

i normaily only connect the two computers with a crossover wire. i also use a router when i get lazy and dont want to plug the crossover.

I'd highly recommend using the router and not the crossover cable.
What is the connection latency between the two PCs?

as far as network. i know one computer has a nvidia 680i LT motherboard. it says it has a 10/100/1000 network adapter. the other is a dell 410 i think it has the same. dont know what the issue is.

In games, you're getting lag. What is your ping/latency in the games?

if im correct on supreme command FA its says my ping time is 26. how could i check if this is corrent? also i lag while playing a co op game on gears of war. i lag pretty bad too. i've tried different wires and the only one that give it a slight boost is the crossover wire.

Forged ALliance is a MASSIVELY demanding game. Lag in that is from your PC not due to your network. My PC struggles to play Forged Alliance well - click on the link in my signature to see its specs (PC1:Alexandra)
As for Gears of War I'm not sure. A ping of 26 is not that high, but over LAN your pings should be less than 10. Check the network adapter in the 410.

what are the main things that would cause lag on a computer? ill put the specs on both computers and you let me know.

dell xps 410 2.1 core 2 duo 2 gbs memory at 533 mhz.

custom pentium d 925 3.0 OC'd to 3.6 with aftermarket cooler. 2 gb memory at 667. Nvidia 680i LT Motherboard.

both have vista ultimate edition x86

anything else i need to post?

vista ultimate is the problem. you're getting bogged down by it. vista home premium or xp pro is all you needed.

is there any way to change that? i only have the original windows for the dell computer. i bought the vista ultimate for the custom computer. i dont want to go buy windows xp just for a game.

Personally, I'd say Vista is more the problem rather than which version, all of them are system hogs. I hadn't considered the OS but I do remember reading that Vista suffers from slow networking often. Check you have all the relevant updates and read if there are any specific fixes for slow networking that aren't automatic through windows update.
Posting what graphics cards the PCs have would be useful. For Forged Alliance if the frame rate the PC achieves isn't very high, the game will lag.

the 410 has nvidia 7900gs. the custom has x1950 pro 256mb. even on low setting on lan its still slow. we can play the games fine on single player on medium settings.

Hmm, those are fast enough cards to run the game semi-reasonably, but they'll run Gears of War fine, as long as you aren't using a huge resolution (above 1680x1050). If you're getting lag, I suggest you look into the Vista net fixes.

Can't say for sure because I don't run Vista (this is one reason among many), but have a browse through articles like this one
