I am wondering if there is a free program that is simmular to PowerDVD for playing DVD's with 5.1 surround sound.

I used to have no problem with 5.1 surround sound when I was using Power DVD but I just relized that I am only getting sound from two speakers now.

The settings do not even show a 5.1 setting, only 2 speakers.

you are using powerdvd now right?
windows media player plays dvds and supports 5.1 surround sound
    latest version here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediaplayer/default.mspx

do you have multiple codec packs installed, codec pack interfere with each other for the worse, for instance the combination of the k-lite codec pack and Xp codec pack cancels out 5.1 surround sound for any file type but WMV amd MP3, i suggest only having only codec pack installed at a time

your speakers may have there own software that is running on the task bar, one common version looks like this

whether your speakers have a control panel running for them on the taskbar or not there going to have a control panel installed

it will look similar to this, in any event there will be an option to change the scheme to 5.1, make sure that it is enabled

you can also get windows media player classic?

otherwise this is the only other media player
    that any good
