If you're an adult in North America or Europe (save Finland and a scant few other nations), the extreme scenario is that you can be imprisoned for several years and pay up to and including $250,000 per count of piracy.
If you're a minor, you can still be sued...not sure on the prison penalties.
When pursued by the media companies in the US, there's an average settlement of $10,000 and no prison time is issued.
If you are ignorant to the possible consequences of any actions, you should not pursue those actions. This applies to everything in life.

I received a couple of those e-mails from Comcast with no further action taken up to this point in time. The only thing I can suggest is to take a break from downloading for a little while or try not to use the torrent site that was associated with the files in question......or just stop being such a major life threatening criminal to society and NEVER download a single thing again without paying like all the angels in these and other forums that preach then turn around and describe in depth how to get away with all the "illegal" piracy at the same time! Right guys!? :)

I wouldn't suggest keeping the torrents involved in the "copyright infringement" issue up for uploading or even on your system very long for obvious reasons. I know leaving the torrent for others to upload is the "right" thing to do after downloading but i'm sure everyone will get over it and it shouldn't affect you in any important way. Let's see........be called a leecher by a bunch of pocket protector wearing, living with their parents PC nerds or.... get dropped by your Internet Provider and possibly sued! Which one sounds better?

Don't worry about it. These peeps are out to flame and scare you. Don't know why they do it anyway. This is a common thing amongst comcast suscribers. Comcast isn't at fault here. MPAA and warner bros etc.. are. Comcast might keep sending you notices, but they don't do anything, they are out for the uploaders.
All.

How can you possibly feel justified in downloading without ever contributing back?

If using a public tracker seeding isn't required, it's just the moral thing to do...if people didn't seed then you wouldn't be able to download the things you want. If you belong to a private tracker then seeding is a must to keep your ratio at whatever the site requires or your account will be suspended.
As for changing your name, it can't be done. The only way to change your screen name is to create a new account and start from scratch.
