I have a laptop "hp compaq nc6000" and when I turn it on it gives me this error message "non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready" Whats wrong and how can I fix it?
It means the drive it is attempting to boot from does not contain the system files required to boot, or they are corrupt / damaged. This can mean one of a few things. 1) Your boot order may have been changed (this is the order in which your bootable hardware are booted from). Usually its set to DVD / CD > Floppy > USB > Hard drive. If the hard drive option is no longer there, then it will never boot from it. It can be changed easily by going into your BIOS and making sure its in the selected boot order. 2) You may have a corrupt bootable CD / DVD in your optical drive. Try making sure your CD / DVD and floppy drives are empty, and that you have no USB memory cards / sticks / drives plugged in. 3) Your boot files may be corrupt / deleted. If you put your windows installation disk into the optical drive and reboot you can repair the windows installation from there. 4) Your hard drive may be faulty / on its way out. If it is this option I would recommend leaving the drive, purchasing a replacement and installing windowson it. Then plug the old drive in as a spare / slave, and see if you can transfer any remaining files form the faulty drive. Don't run scandisk etc as if there is problems with the drive physically, then you could damage data you could otherwise have retrieved. Let us know how you get on.
Was it running windows xp? It's possible that the boot sector became corrupt. If it was XP I would boot up with the windows disk and go to the Recovery Console and try typing fixboot to see if that helps, there is also a command in there to fix the MBR but I don't remember what it is, you can type HELP and it will give you a list of all the available commands.
In the boot options are as followed: Quick boot enable f10 and f12 delat (sec) 0 multiboot enable express boot popup (sec) 0 boot order: notebook hard drive first notebook multibay second notebook ethernet third Is this how its supposed to be? I tried finding the recovery disc but I cant find it, any ideas on were I can get another one? Thank you.
There may be a small recovery partition on your hard drive. I don't remember the F? key that you have to hit to get to it, but it should be in your users manual.
Its f12. I tried it but it still doesn't work. I did a hardware test to check the hardware and it passed all the test. Do you think that it will be better to buy another hard drive or another laptop? I mean if Ican get this issue resolve
did you try repairing the boot sector on the hard drive? You may want to do that before calling it quits
As stated twice before in earlier replies. You need a copy of a windows XP installation disk to do a repair. When you boot from the installation disk you have an option to do a repair. If you need more info or help, then i suggest going to this site and reading what is available. Be carefull though it shows tutorials for both XP and Windows 2000 at the same time.
