when its converted to avi does it keep the same quality without making it way too big of a file cause thats what i experienced with river past video cleaner,it made it bigger than 1 gb for only 36 seconds of video
Whoa, 1GB for 36 seconds! The conversions I've done have ended up with the .avi being about 15-20 MB bigger than the original .mkv An example would be one episode of an anime (232 MB original .mkv), converted comes out as a 248MB .avi
ConvertxtoDVD will not convert to AVI. Here is a method to change the the container to AVI without reencoding and losing quality: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038 Avidemux I think can do the same thing .

LOL! You should see my wall of shame, full of brain farts! For converting to DVD, yes, ConvertxtoDVD and DVD Flick are the best choices. Not really sure why he/she wants to change to AVI.
I often need to convert .mkv to .avi in order to watch certain anime on my divx player. Converting to dvd just takes up to much space for me.
I always use MKVtoolnix / MKVextract etc,etc. Anytime there a conversion (ie. a re-encode) there's always some quality loss. Good luck -
Depends what you mean by conversion. If you just change the container from MKV to AVI, without reencoding/re-compressing, there will be No quality loss. If you re-compress the video, there will always be some quality loss.
How?! I am trying to do the same. I have an .mkv file and I have ConvertXtoDVD. Now how do I convert to AVI? I just want a file that I can burn to disc with Nero.
MKV is just a container like avi. It is being used for higher end video.. often x264, but in theory you can put anything at all in a MKV container, even mjpeg slideshows. Open the file with vlc and look at what you actually have. It might be just divx/xvid in which case you can just rip with avidemux to a different file name. It may be something exotic tho, like some of the experimental 3480x2100 100fps x264 that are around for testing purposes.. you can tell those because 25 mins of video is 5 gigs.. I think they are possibly a cinema format to replace cans of film. So do what davexnet suggests, use the right tools for the job. Now sqwurly.. have you tried adding your file to convertX or are you posting before trying.
Yes, I have tried in ConvertX but I can't seem to figure out how to get the output to avi and not dvd, although from this thread, I can't tell whether it converts mkv or not. Now I'm using mkv to avi converter but it just hangs everytime and will not work. The mkv file is a movie file. I will try avidemux but it looks a little complex for my understanding. I have a 10.7 GB movie in mkv that I'd like to convert to a 10.7 GB avi file so that I can burn it to DL disc in Nero. That's my goal. If someone can help me out with that, it'd be awesome.
ConvertxtoDVD does not convert to AVI ot anything else but DVD. First, load the MKV file in GSpot and see what kind of video/audio you have inside the MKV container. Second, where do you wanr to play that movie? A standalone Divx player, PS#, XBOX...? Depending on what you have inside the container, you might or might not have to re-encode it(which means loss of quality). If no re-encoding necessary, you just change the container.
There is no information displayed in Gspot when I open the file in it (other than it is a Matroksa media file, under Container section). I know it is a working movie because it plays in VLC. I tried to convert it in Avidemux but I got a bunch of messages: "If the file is using bframe as reference, it can lead to crash or stutteting. Avidemux can use another mode which is safed but YOU WILL LOOSE FRAME ACCURACY." and "No audio decoder found for this file. Save (A+V) will generate bad AVI. Save audio will work." I proceeded and the resulting file was unrecognizable to any program. I'd like watch this on any regular DVD player. I expect a little quality loss because I plan to burn to dual layer disc but that shouldn't be a huge deal because it is a Blu Ray rip. Right?
