I have backed up DVDs for approx 4 years now. However, I juts started experiencing problems with bad disc errors. I ordinarily use shrink followed up by DVD Decrypter. However, I also use HDFAB to shrink to Decrypter and also AnyDVD + Shrink to DVD Decrypter. Doe to the problems that I had been having, (I am burning but getting bad discs) i switched to ImgBurn. Well, that doesn't seem to be doing the trick either. Here is my latest log from Imgburn. I use Maxell DVD+Rs.
I am wondering if this is a hardware issue or if it is something that can be fixed with a mere software download.
--On a side note..I am looking into getting a new PC and was curious as to whether or not a burner that writes dual layer will be signifigantly more beneficial than one that only writes single layer.
I have backed up DVDs for 4 yaers,...but everything always worked smoothly so I am not up to date on the latest technology so any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PS--I didn't use the retry option on this log but I have done it before numerous times. I just burned this so i could get a log to post here.

E 22:30:51 Close Track Failed! - Reason: Power Calibration Area Error

Some possible reasons why you're getting this error:
1)You're using poor quality media
2)You're burning too darn fast
3)Your drive's firmware is outdated and so doesn't correctly recognize the media
4)The drive's lens may be dirty
5)The drive could possibly be bad

So..

1)Try using verbatim disks
2)Burn no faster than 1/2 the rated speed of the media
3)Update the drive's firmware if one is available, check here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php
4)Try cleaning the lens with a cleaning CD
5)If all fails and all burns end up with the same error, buy another drive

Tried the firmware update...but that didn't do the trick. However, (and i feel like a big dope for this being the reason for my problems) I cleaned the lens and presto...it works fine. I guess I started reading the log and was trying to figure out what was going on as opposed to using common sense and realizing that I have a 2 pack a day habit that is murder on optical drives.

Thanks again for the help.

i would be more concerned about what my lungs looked liked than the optical drives lol, still remember to use good media burning no faster then 8x max
