Lately I've been having problems with my laptop. I have an Advent 7113 with Vista Home Premium. I play Sims2 on it daily and most times it works fine but whenever I take out the disc to burn a dvd or what not it gives me problems when I try to play Sims2 afterwards. Sometimes it starts to loads and just stops, other time my computer doesn't seem to recognise that I have a dvd drive. When all else fails I ussualy shut down and restart but my screen stays blank/black. After sometime I finnaly get fed up and open up my dvd drive and then windows begins to load normally. It's like my laptop is trying to boot off of my sims disc. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks
The computer will try to boot of whatever CD is in the drive but should just skip it once it sees that it isn't a bootable CD. It seems as though your CD drive is going bad. You said that it burns DVDs fine. It could be the CD part of it that's going bad. The drive has 2 voltage controls, DVD and CD. The CD voltage is probably off. You can attempt to fix it by opening it and seeing the small controls on the side of the laser but one wrong move can make it not read cds at all. The below is a PlayStation 2 Laser with the voltage controls circled in red. The laser on your drive should have controls that look similar. One is for DVD, other is for CD. Not sure which is which. I think its Right CD, Left DVD. If you do adjust it, always do it by 1 to 2 degree intervals. VERY SLOWLY
