I have recently installed Debian Linux/GNU on my PC and would like to know what media players are you Linux gurus using. I was using Windows Media Player 11 (I know shame on me, right) when I had XP installed on my machine but now its time for a change. I would like something that I can organize my songs in, because I've currently got roughly 10 gigs of music on my HDD but no media player (except the one included with the OS, and thats a media player to organize music in). Thanks for any suggestions, much obliged :)

in my opinion amarok is by far he best, great organiser, easy to use, automatically finds your new music, and can minimize into your system tray.

And takes forever refreshing the media library every time you load it.. duplicating every song listed.. mine is now at 35 entries for every song.. I can't find a way to stop this behaviour either.

If you want nice and lean then xmms, but if you have added anything which installs kmixer the eq will be broken :(

Theres Exaile player as well.. I have it installed but can't say as I have loaded it up and looked at it yet

For listening to gigabytes of mp3's, xmms gets my vote; for listening to the radio i like realplayer or helixplayer depending on which pc/distro i'm using at the time.

I have Amarok as my main player, and it can be pain in the ass while re-reading all your files. I have tried Exaile, which tries to be a clone of Amarok only it is written in GTK rather than QT. I think it is still a bit buggy, and still has a long way to go. but when they sort it out I think it will be a good alternative to Amarok, but the features with Amarok are hard to beat.

hey KT, see you're still delving further into the *nix world.

I have a few machines with many hard drives, all networked, so xmms wins hand down for me, i like to keep things simple; 3/400GB of MP3's for me, however i obviously don't keep playlists for that lot, with so much tuneage i have to just pick what i want when i want a change

Hey Creaky, not so much delving as living in *nix world. don't use M$ at all in the house (unless on a lappy of the kids). Part of the Debian Linux Strikeforce (i am sure you can guess who the other member is lol)
