Any chance that you already assigned another ringtone to that contact on your list? That'll override the default ringtone.
On my V3 you select the ringtone from the media list, apply as ringtone.. then you HAVE to hit the "Done" button, It messed me up at first not noticing the little "Done" thingy to select.
Have you tried renaming the new ring tone? Just throwing ideas out there since no one else has chimed in yet...

You must have the ringstyle on 'loud' or something similar, then simply hover of the song in the 'my sounds' menu and press the menu button, and hit 'apply as ringtone.'

You'll need to shorten them. Tha maximum size ring tone allowed by the V3 is 100kb. It wasn't mentioned in the specs, but there may also be limit on the quality level of the song. If you bought them online, the quality has already been compressed, probably to 128 bit, and that should work. If you ripped them from CDs, and didn't reduce the bit rate in the process, they may not work.

There is a free program called Audacity that you can use to clip out any portion of an MP3 to use as a ring tone. It can also adjust the bit rate at the same time.

You'll find a link to download it, and instructions on how to use it here:

I'm sorry, I thought you had MPT, it has a shortener. Again, I'm sorry I misunderstood.
