Are we talking about DVD ROM drives?

Generally SATA drives will be slightly quicker access times, but you need to confirm that any stats you compare are like for like, as some manufacturers will quote CD access, and some DVD access, the latter is slower.

The access time is the time to access the data on the disk, this includes the time to start the disk spinning.

Some drives can be loaded with tweaked firmware and access times decreased.

Generally though you're unlikely to notice any real difference.

For DVD drive, it honestly doesn't make a difference. I would use SATA personally, but that's just because I hate IDE for unfounded reasons.

Either one is fine unless you are talking about HDDs, then it is SATA for sure.

How many drives are you using?

I would just go with SATA.

Sata cables are smaller so less heat in the case and better air flow would get SATA and there is no price difference.

I use totally SATA optical drives, and those that I want to keep using that are native IDE, I use IDE to SATA converters on.

Smaller cables, easier to fit, and as IDE becomes redundant and starts dissappearing from newer boards, you will still have usable kit without having to do any mods like using an adaptor.

    SATA all the way!!!!!!!!!!
