thanks for the reply guys, I haven't tried reading with any other burning software but even my cyberlink powerdvd wouldn't play movies when I tried. rotary,
I haven't made changes to the setup of the drive or cables for it, I have made other changes on my pc setup hardware wise as I installed a new SATA HDD to my system which would coincide with the upgrade to winXP but should not be causing any interference to the burner because it's SATA.
master and slave settings are good because if they weren't then I'm sure my bios or windows would give me an error and not detected one of the devices on this IDE channel.
What should I check spacifically as far as DMA goes, as I mentioned this error only occurs in DMA mode I'm ok in PIO mode.
firmware is up-to-date as the first thing I tried to do was upgrade the firmware to latest.
aspichk shows everything is running ok.
aspi32.sys ver. 4.71.2
wowpost.exe ver. 4.6(1021)
winaspi.dll ver. 4.6(1021)
winaspi32.dll ver. 4.71.2
are these the most recent?
also in dvddecrypter when I try to change the I/O setting to any of the ASPI ones I get an error doesn't matter if it's read or write mode but, SPTI is the only I/O mode that's accepted which kinda makes me think it's an ASPI problem???

not sure about the 40 or 80 wire IDE cables but I have no other spare IDE cables maybe I'll switch the cables that are already in the pc but they both look the same.
Since there is no problem when I boot into safe mode I'm thinking this is more of a software problem rather than hardware. there must be something that loads up in normal mode or safe mode with networking that is causing the problem, because in safe mode it works like a charm.
I'll try that
forceAspi, if you have any other suggestions send them my way!
