My computer (HP dv6730) has HDMI output but no S/PDIF and my reciever (YAMAHA RX V-459) has S/PDIF and coaxial input but no HDMI.

So is it somehow possible to get 5.1 sound?

    Thanks

(I aslo have a Samsung R81 LCD if it would help??)

No. but you could buy an audio card with 5.1 out (S/PDIF) pretty cheap.

    http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/micro/home.aspx

At bottom of page it says the following:

Add Digital Audio output to any PC or Laptop
The included Digital Audio adapter allows you to easily digitally connect to home theater or recording equipment. Just plug the adapter in to the Audio Advantage Micro, then connect your equipment via an optical digital cable.

NOTE: I am not trying to sell you this. I do not know if it works as advertised. This is to let you know there are options available.
