folks, this afternoon I accidentally deleted an important Microsoft Word document. It inadvertently went into the recycle bin with other things and was deleted with the rest of the stuff in the bin.

I am running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron. The computer has not been turned off, restarted, etc. Are there any programs that would allow me to recover that document?

I considered doing a "system restore" to a few days ago, but I don't think that includes actual documents, does it? It only affects programs?

Whatever app you use it must not be an installer type, doing so could overwrite

In ddp's post above, the first link is to undelete plus,if the link is to the installer type go to undelete's home site instead & download the non install version,it works ok .there's also another i've used but i can't remember if it's a non installer called recuva

PS:Nothings worse than deleting something only to find you want it back, there's a number of option's you can use so it does'nt happen, the easiest is tweakui which you can use to hide the rec bin & only delete stuff after 14 days, the second & third type is automated ,it's a software that monitors changes to all data & creates a backup of it in realtime, the others are diskeeper which backsup all deleted files & quite possably these next two may do the same[acronis & norton software?], as well as googling for similar software if price is an issue, there maybe even free versions

great, thanks to both of you! I appreciate the help.

At this very moment, I am running a data recovery program called ADRC Data Recovery Express, it's been running for HOURS and is up to 60 thousand files of various types, still going. Is this normal, or should a scan take much less time?

alright folks.....here's the deal. (I think) I was able to recover the document, I found it after using 4 different recovery programs.

the problem is, it doesn't appear to be legible. It has the correct title, it is about the correct size (about 27.5 kb), but it has been changed to a bunch of symbols like this:

    ! 8 R Hõ x `‹Hó

those symbols exist in various combinations throughout the entire document, with a TON of 'page breaks' added in..... so many, that it makes the document say it has 185 pages.

any way to re-translate that to a normal "Word" document?

man they didnt keep it simple for you

    i would have ran restoration

with restoration you would have to know what ile it was in and then send i to your desktop.. once restored you change the name back to what it was because it get slightly alterd.

maybe you can still do that

    heres the link http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

    good luck

    correction:

with restoration you would have to know what FOLDER it was deleted from and then send i to your desktop.. once restored you change the name back to what it was because it gets slightly alterd when at irst deleted.
