I apologize if this has already been explained to hell and back, but I didn't really know how to search for something like this.

(I'm also fairly certain that it's a simple issue, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it.)

    The issue is this:

I have a Word document. I have Mac OS X on a Powerbook G4. I have MS Word for Mac OS X. I open up a Word document for Mac OS X, and it opens up fine. I open another Word document, and the filename gets changed

    from "Word Document Of Me"

to "Word Document #<some random 2-3 digit number or letter>".

Now, I know this has nothing to do with what a "31 characters long" problem that appears sometimes, because I've moved the file into a location where the total number of symbols/letters/etc is only about 10.

    Any help? Thanks a lot.

    Update:

What I've figured is that it has less to do with the length of the file address and more with the length of the filename itself. The filename itself can't be more than 31 characters long (including the .doc at the end).

Is there any way to change this?

What version of Word are you using. If it is renaming your files with a # and numbers behind it, it sounds like you are using an old os9 version say from office 98 or office 2001. If you are using Office X, 2004 and 2008 all of those support over more than 31 character file names.

Yeah, I've got Word X or whatever it is on here. I figured it out a few hours after posting this up.

Thanks, though. Any way to close this?
