This is just purely out of curiosity from someone with an engineering background that always questions why rather than accept it does and be done with it :)
I have v**gin + and have a 46" lcd 1080p tv ,the setup from the v+ box is set to supposedly send a 1080wide picture and the tv is set to broadcast what ever the signal sent is ,in my case 1080 (sams*ng just wide setting)
With v*gin when you use the tv guide you also get a small screen of the current channel selected even though it's not an hd program the small screen has the picture quality of an hd signal but when you then watch in full screen unless it is an hd broadcast the picture quality is not as good could someone explain why (there's the why) this might be the case i suspect it may be some sort of picture compression but i'm used to nuts and bolts not anodes diodes frequency etc so not sure I've also noticed that some channels are better than others as far as quality of picture on the larger screen
    hope that makes sense

HD signals are sent @ 720i 720p 1080i 1080p. i=interlaced p=progressive scan. Those numbers refer to resolution, like your PC does for it's monitor. When you view SD - standard defition it looks terrible compared to HD (full screen). When you see SD in that guide window it looks clear as HD for the same reason as if you take a picture on your computer and keep zooming in on it, you eventually see the pixels. HD is so much clear and such because the resolution is some much higher the SD. Google will tell you more.
