Need to split one big MKV file into two....

I want to split this big 7.94 gb .mkv movie file I have into 2 part so I could fit it onto 2 playable dvd's since my blank discs only hold up to 4.7gb apiece. I'm told an mkv file can be burned onto a dvd as is an should play in your dvd player just like that so I guess I don't need to be worried about converting the type of file since an mkv file i'm told is supposed to be burned as is.

 

I don't know of any standalone DVD players that handle .mkv files.
I think the file will either have to be converted to DVD movie format or (if your player is DivX certified) an AVI.

The free software 'DVD Flick' can convert mkv to DVD format.

I have dvd flick and convertxtodvd....how would I use either or both of these to do what I need to?

dvd and a DVD created from it.

Is this what you are talking about ? Or does your dvd player player
MKV directly? This is the kind of distinction you need to make when you
make a post, otherwise we wont get anywhere.

uh huh well I think it does play mkv files....I don't see why it wouldn't or how I could check if it does...it plays pretty much everything else.

 

I assume I need to convert it to split it into smaller files... is there a way I can just split this file as is into two or 3 smaller parts?

 

It's not the size of the file, it's the running time of the movie.
If it's a 2 - 2½ hour movie there should be no problem.

 

I am not aware of any stand alone DVD player that supports mkv playback...
If you just want to split the file in 2 as is, you can use MKVMerge GUI or AVIMux Gui.
If you have a Divx certified player, depending on what you have inside the MKV container, you could just change the container, otherwise, you have to convert to DVD/avi. With AVI though, I think there is a file size limit...

 

It's american gangster..... it won't let me burn on the cd's I got...it says I need double layer dvd+r or double layer dvd-r discs...what are those?

 

Well, you can't burn 7.94 GB of data on a 4.7 GB disc(the capacity of a single layer). You need a Double Layer disc. However, burning as MKV, you will just be ruining a disc.

Yeah thanks another friend just told me about getting some dual or double layer discs and so I just got some by Sony.
