I have just had to re-install windows XP and install all relative update and restored my PC to the way it was for all except the shut down menu.

Instead of the 3 coloured buttons I now have a drop-down box.

Why is this? and how do I change it back?

Your welcome screen is probably turned off. When you log on, you either have the welcome screen (blue screen with the names and pictures of all the users), or the old login screen (dialog box with Username andPassword fields). If you're using the welcome screen, you'll have the "three colored buttons" shutdown box. Otherwise, you'll have the menu. To switch to the welcome screen, go to Control Panel > Users > Change how user log on and off. Then check the box that says Use the welcome screen. If this doesn't work, let us know.
