I followed instructions from DVD Flick guide to add .srt file to .avi file so I could convert to DVD file. The film's audio is in english with occasional russian spoken (the subtitles are english for the russian speaking parts). I added the .avi file, hit edit and added the .srt file, and then converted to DVD file. I then dropped my resulting DVD folder into Nero and burned a disk. No subtitles on the russian parts. I later found out the subtitles should play even before I burn disk. I put the .avi and .srt file in same folder with the exact same name except for file extension ie. "movie.avi" and "movie.srt" and I tried to play with VLC. The video works fine but no subtitles show up during russian parts. Any ideas?
With VLC (using AVI and .srt) in Settings>Preferences>Video>Subtitles, 'Autodetect subtitle Files' has to be checked and the subtitles have to be explicitly selected under the 'Video' tab while the clip is playing.
So are you saying the subtitles may already be on my DVD file, but when I play it back - whether on VLC or on my stand-alone player - I need to enable the subtitles to play, they don't play automatically?
So I was just able to play the subtitles properly with VLC, thanks for the heads up on how to do that.
DVD flick allows subtitles to be played automatically (disk in standalone player). After loading the .srt file, elect to edit it and check 'Display by default'
Yes, when the title starts playing in the standalone player, the subs are on (of course you can still turn them off with the remote). The same thing if you select 'DVD' with VLC and start the title.
