Site update - March 16th 2010

AfterDawn.com has been updated! In addition to renewing the layout of the site we have also speeded up things considerably. The new version has been tested on our Finnish site for several months, and during the testing we have managed to improve the new version even further.

You can now enjoy this new layout at English AfterDawn.com and English Discussion Forums as well! We have also introduced new sections to the site, and re-arranged things a bit.

MAXIMUM C-8000 Software?!

#1 10 Mar 2008 @ 13:00
I was wondering if anyone knows where to download software for the digital-set-top box Maximum C-8000 CX-CI.(I found a lot for Topfield 5100 series, which has a lot simpler O/S. Think it's a bit odd if there are none for this one)

Like Dreambox, the Maximum c-8000 has Linux based O/S. Does anyone know if you can use software developed for the Dreambox for the C-8000 as well?

The C-8000 has potential! If everything works fine and if i can find software for extended use, this might quite possibly be the ultimate PVR out there!

(I will begin testing the different features of the box tomorrow. I will post anything of value that i discover in this thread as i go along.)

OK!

Now i have tested the Maximum C-8000 PVR (Personal Video Recorder). The PVR and its features works ok, but there are some remarks i have to make regarding the functionality.

- The remote sucks!!! If the remote is important for you as well, either don't buy this PVR, or buy a other BETTER universal remote as a complement(solved this with a Logitech Harmony remote - they rule:))
The one that comes with the box, sends a quite weak RF signal, so you have to point it straight at the PVR for it to connect. Just slightly off, and nothing happens. This causes frustration and i was really disappointed at first, because i thought it was the Maximum that performed this badly/slowly.

- Some issues with sound! The sound seems to become abnormally loud in a random matter...and in other cases it is completely muted without cause. don't know why... I found two solutions.

Solution one (best): connect your box to a AV receiver with s/pdif optical cable, and don't use the TV's sound at all!
Solution two: I also found that the sound consistency improves if you remove the dolby surround option in the sound menu. (given you have the box connected to the TV with a HDMI cable.)

- Some reliability problems as well. The box locked up for no apparent reason today 2-3 times. Had to pull the plug out of the wall to get it to respond again.

All in all! the box performs quite nicely. Video streeming and file moving is hassle free over LAN. With just reading the user guide you should be able to set up the network and the PVRs network features. (even if you're not an expert!) A bit PC know how and a little networking skills are required though.

NOW comes the hard part! I haven't found ANY software for the box yet. Guess i will start trying out different Power PC/Linux software tomorrow or this weekend.

I'll let you know as it progresses!:)

Cheers!

I have encountered some bugs with the bo now....
It worked fine for a week. This weekend i had to reset it a couple of times, and today it had totally flipped out.
Nothing else helped, so i had to reset factory setting to get it to work.

If the problem persists, i will have to return it... Nobody wants to do a channel search an setup ones PVR every week!

I'll keep you posted!
