I have pretty much got the hang of home networking. Now I want to take my knowledge to the next level and need help. I want to be able to access my home pc and its contents (files, media, etc..) from any pc. I know that software such as LogMeIn will allow me to do this however for file sharing etc.. there is a cost. I would very much like to know what I need to do to setup my own server which would allow me to do what I want, however I'm not sure of all that I need, I know I would need a static IP which I'm not sure how to get, and I'm just not sure on everything else I would need. Can someone point me in the right direction!!! Thanks
The simplest software to use for what you want is TightVNC: http://www.tightvnc.com/ To setup a static IP if you are behind a router: http://portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm 1) The first thing you do after installing the software is go to this page and found your router: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm 2) Once you find it and have clicked on it, look for "Tight VNC" and follow instructions. 3) If you are behind a firewall you'll have to open TightVNC ports as you did for your router. 4) When testing it, don't forget to add the port number to your IP address: e.g. 111.22.333.44:5800 Let us know if you need more help.
Thanks for the info I really appreciate it. Will that software allow me to transfer files, media, etc... or just only allow me to control the desktop? Thanks again
