I'm going to assume that you're running Windows XP. You need to change your file type for .zip back to "Compressed (zipped) Folders". Here are the steps.

    1. Open the Control Panel
    2. Select "Folder Options" (you may need to enable classic view)
    3. Choose the "File Types" tab
    4. Scroll down to "ZIP"
    5. Highlight "ZIP" and press "Change"
    6. Select "Compressed (zipped) Folders"
    7. Press OK and close all open Windows

As an alternative, you can install a 3rd party application that open Zip files, such as 7-Zip (link here). A 3rd party application will usually change the file types automatically during the install.

Installing 7-Up will probably still fix your problem with Vista, but my other solution will only work with Windows XP. In order to fix the .zip extension in Vista, you'll have to do the following.

Delete this registry key, it will reset the associations for zip files.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.zip

You can also follow the instructions listed on the following site.
    http://blogs.dotnethell.it/vincent/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista__10654.aspx

After you apply the registry fix, you'll have to log off and log back into Windows. I tested both of them and they both worked.
