Hi,
I have downloaded a video file with the extention mpg, however, when I right-click on it and select "properties" I see it's described as Winamp media file. I can play it only with VLC player and Quick Time Player, however neither with Winamp player nor with Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic. Also, when I tried to open the said file in Subtitles Workshop, there appeared a message : The "... (name of the movie).mpg" is not a valid video file.
Is there a way (or program) to convert such a file into an avi file ?
Thanks in advance

According to Gspot, what I need is a MPEG-1 System Stream Container; however I didn't find a free download for such a container.
Furthermore : It seems to me, that if I manage to download and install such a layer, I will be able to play the said video with the players mentioned by you, however that wouldn't solve the other problem I mentioned, namely :Subtitle Workshop will still notify me that that mpg file is not a valid video file. Am I right ? If yes, then I need a proper program to convert that file into avi. Any suggestions ?
Thans in advance

Converting to AVI, in this case, I think won't be necessary. This could very well be just a codec issue. Install FFDSHOW. Most of the time the error "File is not a valid video file" error message in Subtitle Workshop means you don't have the proper codecs installed.

Hi prime and thanks again for your prompt response,
Well I have downloaded & installed FFDSHOW, however I am still able to play that mpg file only with the VLC player. Also, Subtitle Workshop still notifies me that the file (namely, the mpg)is not a valid video file. Is it possible that after installing FFDSHOW I had to configure it ?
As a matter of fact, I opened the [b]ffdshow video decoder configuration file[/b,clicked there on "codec" and when I saw there that MPEG1 and MPEG2 decoders are "disabled" I tried to change that in order to see whether that solves the problem; however, I found no way to change the "disabled".
Thanks in advance

The corrector indeed solved all the problems : now I can play the mpg file with all the players; and - what's more important - Subtitles Workshop accepts the corrected mpg file.
