Opera problems

Ok I have tried to install Java so I could use it and Flash on it. I'm not really sure if Flash worked on it or not but it did install. Now Java is being a major headache. I've looked at several places including the Opera website and Java website. I installed Java as far as I know but The Opera website says I need to find two files called libjava.so and libawt.so. Of course I can't find these files and the directory ( /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/lib/i386) isn't on my pc. But there is a /usr/lib/java/ directory. Did I install the right Java? I worked on this all evening but nothing....

 

Flash Player (Adobe)

Command line instructions to locate the Flash plug-in if it is installed:

* locate libflashplayer.so, or
* find / -name libflashplayer.so 2> /dev/null

If Flash plug-in is not installed, or you wish to upgrade, proceed as follows:

1. Download the plug-in from Adobe's Web site.
2. Follow the instructions on the download page. The installer will offer to install the plug-in, and for Opera you should choose /usr/lib/opera as the installation path.
3. Restart Opera.
4. Verify that the plug-in is working by going to Adobe's test page.

Java Runtime Environment (Sun)

The Java plug-in is part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), but Opera does not use the plug-in: it uses the JRE directly. To get Java working with Opera, you must install the JRE, and configure Opera with the correct Java path.

Command line instructions to locate the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) if it is installed:

* locate libjava.so, or
* find / -name libjava.so 2> /dev/null

Before proceeding, you may wish to test Java to see if Opera has been able to auto-detect your Java installation using our test applet. If Opera does not show this applet (an animated analog clock), you must install the JRE and/or configure Opera with the correct Java path:

1. Download the Java Runtime Environment that is suitable for your system. For systems that are older than the ones listed in System Requirements on the download page, you will need version 1.3.1. Follow the installation instructions linked from the download page.
2. Go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content, and click the "Java options" button. If this button is dimmed, first check the "Enable Java" option.
3. Click the "Choose" button for the "Java path" field. The path you are looking for is the directory of your Java installation containing the files libjava.so and libawt.so, for example /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.03/jre/lib/i386 on an Ubuntu system. The command line tools indicated above should locate the directory.
4. Click the "Validate Java path" button. If you get an error message, try again with a different path.
5. Click "OK" to save your changes and exit the Java dialog. Click "OK" to save your changes and exit the Preferences dialog.

I installed JRE but still no libjava.so Flash is installed and i did find the file for flash. When I installed JRE it had a few error messages but I can't get them to appear again the they did the first time. I am getting pretty annoyed with this but I guess I'll keep trying. I like Opera because it is lightweight and it runs the fastest of the browers I have hopefully I can get Java to work soon.

 

Ok I now have java working. I went to Adept Installer and it worked. Now flash is the problem so I will work on it.

 

You need to locate the libflashplayer.so file. I don't know where that will be on your system as it can go to different places.

I have it on a lot of times...... it works, but no sound for me because of something to do with my sound hardware.

 

I found the file but I just get a grey box where flash stuff is supposed to be. Have any idea what the deal is with that?

 

probably not enabled somewhere. I don't know as I don't use opera. Creaky will know.

Problem resolved. I donwloaded Opera 9.5 Beta and the flash works fine.

 

I use iceweasel and kamehakase and sometimes dillo

 

Check in your content settings for

MIME types:
application/futuresplash:spl:FutureSplash Player
application/x-shockwave-flash:swf:Shockwave Flash

which should be enabled also (similar I assume to the firefox about:config settings, how it handles certain filetypes.

Mine is even more strange than that.. If I load flashplayer as a standalone app and save the swf files it will play them with sound.. everything else works just fine.. All I can't try is setting my NIC to half duplex because other machines rely on this one for firewall/dhcp connectivity.
