New to AVi and Xvid

I am trying to run a av i file and i have loaded the newest verison of Xvid and Divx but it still will not play and even tried to encode it but still nothing. I am very new at this can somone help me out?

I guess you forgot to mention what program you tried to run it with, what the origin of the .avi file is, and whether or not it is an Xvid or Divx .avi file.

Try playing it in VLC. If it still fails to initiate playback or manifests problems with either the video or audio, then install FFDSHOW.

ok i have installed FFDshow cause VLN did not work what do i do from this point
