hi ,

i am wanting to backup some dvd's that i have of home movies , and i wanted something that will last and not have to worry about them . i know ty are the best along with verbatim but they are hard to get here . is there a dvd+r that comes close to the ty as far as reliablity and quality . would sony come close or another brand you would recommend that would do the job . i can pick up a 50 pack of sony for 21.00 at wal-mart were the ty's are about 35 and then another 15.00 for shipping . i just wanted to know what you guys recommend , thanks

Look on the wrappers of Sony,Fuji, and Maxell. Look for the spindles that say Made in Japan. Japanese sony/fuji will yield taiyo yuden and Japanese Maxell will yield Hitachi. Hitachi is some very good media as well, but getting harder to find.

Maxell +8x in regular and full hub inkjet printable-which walmart used to carry.

Sony/Fuji +8x speed, and rarely found in Sony +16x speed.
Sony -1x-8x and -1x-16x may also yield Sony Tys.

With sony media: Look for Made in Japan. You can also tell by the spacer-White/octagon foam spacer= Ty. Round white/ Round gray = regular sony media, which is still pretty good. The foam spacer was the sure giveaway until sony started slapping a label on top of the spindle.

That's highway robbery. You should be able to get 100 for same price,or a couple bucks more. Example: Staple's has 100 pks of Sony on sale for $24

Here's some Ty Thermals with free shipping:

Even though they are thermals, you can still use a sharpie to write on them, just like regular dvd media.

Sony are very good and easily found on sale at B&M stores like staples/bestbuy/office max/office depot.

On sale: 50 pk less than $15 and 100 pks less than $25

If you can find the Made in Japan sony, grab em up. They are getting very scarce. The Made in Taiwan are still pretty good.

Walmart will price match in case you have any of those stores nearby with a good sales ad.

Office Depot's brand is also pretty decent.Ricoh and Ritek make their media.

I ordered a door handle for the gf's car back in feb, from the web. Still hasn't arrived and customer service wants my credit card # again to re-do the order. NOT! I already got the statement and they got paid. That's why I hate ordering from the net, plus the fighting with USPS and UPS when nobody's home.

The higher price for Plus format media is another load of BS from net stores.
