whats going on? i am in the process of learning how to use Linux and since im a beginner i would like to know what would be the best distro for me to use. something that i cant really go wrong with. Help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
i would start out with ubuntu. it is made to be eay for noobs. you can get it from here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download after you play around with that for a couple of weeks you should move to a better distro like debian. ubuntu is good for begginers but it is not the best. http://www.us.debian.org/
Another good one for beginners is PCLinuxOS, I have it installed on a laptop and it works a treat. Not as much customisation as Debian (on my main box) however good to get you started (helps getting used to installation, what works/doesn't work straight away etc). It comes with all the necessary schtuff to replace M$ bloatware, and runs a lot smoother than Ubuntu (IMHO).
Again soundcard problems.. even with the right module loaded it failed to work..and some strangeness with the cd drive ejecting on a permissions error after playing for 30 seconds. very strange
i havent had any problems with sound on any of my machines with ubuntu. is it a sound card or an onboard sound problem?
Nothing really relevant more an "unsupported hardware" problem with both pclinux and suse.. they seem to have been deliberately nobbled.. It's actually documented as not working with ubuntu (cmi8738 which is a frighteningly cheap and common card to be having problems with) but debian doesn't have any problems with it.. even sound from flashplayer, which makes a change for me
Learning how to use linux??? From a server standpoint I would suggest any RPM distro. Try Fedora or CentOS. If you just want it as a desktop environment I would say try ubuntu or arch
