Yeah "Reservation Road" has a new approach to encryption. AnyDVD's Beta version 6.4.0.3 released last week and the official 6.4.0.4 both handle this disc. Like you I was shocked...the "Main Movie" was a preview and the AnyDVD "Status" info listed no indicators originally showed no signs of major encryption. It's all fixed now though.:P

probably the only other thing you can try is a firmware update for you're drive. Its a drive problem (not being able to read the dvd) or can you try a different brand of drive to transcode it? I have that problem sometimes with my Lite-On drive when my Plextor/Pioneer drive will read it fine

All this fuss about Reservation Road! I'll be picking this up tomorrow on my way to work.
I'm glad I won't have to wait for an AnyDVD release, as the newest one claims to handle this encryption.

I actually bought Reservation Road, and it won't play on either one of my DVD recorders (1 magnavox, 1 emerson) but it does play on the offbrand regular dvd player in my kids room. I have never had this problem. So I tried copying it, with CloneDVD and the latest version of AnyDVD but it did not work, so now I am ripping it to my hard drive with DVDFab Decrypter and hoping I can shrink it with CloneDVD. I can usually conquer the many obstacles that copying DVD's comes with, but this RR DVD is mind boggling.

AnyDVD 6404 has no trouble. I tried NeroRecode. It took recode about 2 min or less to open disc because of the phony movies also present. It looked frozen up, but it was doing it's work. Finally like it always does it told me there were more than one version would I like to copy all and answer NO and you get the movie you want opened. After that everything was like normal. Got a 92.5% compression-didn't bother with advanced analysis, etc.
Edit: Went back and tried CloneDVD, it spent it's time rtying to repair defective DVD to no avail. maybe I didn't let it run long enough.

I thought that CloneDVD would work with DVDFab, it looked like it was working, but when I went to play the DVD it only played the previews. So I just used DVD shrink to burn it, and it works fine. I am rather bitter that I actually bought this DVD and still had to copy it because it wouldnt play in either of my 2 DVD recorders as I stated earlier. I am watching the movie right now, and it seems that it was well worth the trouble. I shouldn't have got so impatient and just dealt with the rented one before going out and buying it.
I'm curious as to why AnyDVD works for some, and not others. It didnt work for me, and I have the latest version. bummer.

Full disc on this one didn't work for me either w/ Anydvd and CloneDVD - even just doing movie, menu & deleted scenes.
My one drive - a Pioneer - even had a tough time reading this disc.
I tried 2 different pc and 3 different drives along with versions 6.4.0.4 & 6.0.4.7 beta AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2.9.0.15 and 2.9.0.16 beta.
It would never get to the encoding stage.
I'm sure movie only will work but I didn't want that :)
So I used DVDFab HD Decrypter 4.1.20 - ripped the full disc and ran it through FixVTS. Opened it in CloneDVD and only the Friday Night Lights episode and other special features came up.
So opened it in vobblanker - gave an error about some vts files it didn't support (I can't remember the exact message).
Said what the heck and blanked out the Friday Night Lights episode and all the 14 second files.
Now opened it in Clone and there was the movie finally.
I haven't watched it but did flip through it and all seemed good.

That was a screener in that thread - looks like they're trying to crack down on those too :)
When you look at the size of the video_ts folder it shows this - and not a typo also :)

clone and anydvd did not work for me either on this one, also interesting that it worked for some and not with most, I do have the latest anydvd, and no I dont think it has anything to do with outdated firmware, when I tried to open this baby up with clone I never seen such a mess like this before, I think there were almost a dozen of the actuall movie listed, I knew that was gonna screw up clone before I even clicked on go and got that error message, I think anydvd is gonna have to make some adjustments on this one and maybe even clone will need to get updated.

it seems to be working use dvdfab decrypter Movie Only! running it though fixvts as i type this then i will burn with clonedvd and let you know if it plays back ok.
Yes it plays back fine so
dvdfab decrypter to rip Movie Only!
clean the file with fixvts
then burn
anydvd will need an update to do this title and so will dvd fab decrypter if you want to do the complete disc

The following programs, all updated to the most recent versions, would not work on RR. Anydvd, ripit4me,dvdshrink, dvdfab decrypter and dvdhdfab, what finally worked was Nero recode.

Be very careful with this one. I used DVDFab Platinum. Then using PgcEdit I had to remap VTST 54 (main movie) to VTST 1 and then delete 43 titlesets in order to get the perfect backup. There's a lot of crap on this one. Started out with 171 files and the finished product has 30 files. That's 141 useless files removed.
