Ripping Subtitles with Auto Gordian Knot

Hi.. I'm trying to rip all the subtitles for every video in a dvd.. AutoGK creates a huge .sub file, which only displays english subtitles when opened with the video and Subtitle Workshop says the file is invalid..

I want to get a valid .sub file for every language.! Please dont tell me to use SubRip, I need to rip ALL the subtitles at once for every video.. Ripping them one by one is a nightmare.. Though choosing them by chapters is a good advantage..

 

Install VobSub(if you don't have it already) and use the utility VobSub Configure that comes with it. It will extract the multi-lingual idx/sub.

I'm changing my answer.. DVDSubEdit can rip subtitles off DVDs and turn them into .srt.. Of course you need to have the DVD.. Though the program uses OCR(Optical character recognition) to convert subtitle images into text and it's not perfect so you get occasional errors in the subtitles..

 

SubRip can do the same thing, OCR the characters and save as .srt.

 

But it asks you to enter the characters it doesnt recognise which is a lot.! I entered like 30 characters or combinations and then gave up.!!

 

I takes me about 10 minutes, depends on the movie, to enter a few characters(you don't have to do the entire movie, just enough so the programs builds a map). I think it can also do it automatically if you don't want to be bothered entering any characters. However,if you let the program do it automatically, that's why "it's not perfect so you get occasional errors in the subtitles..."

 

How do you make it do it automatically?

 

Maybe, don't know for sure, never looked for using that option. I'll give it a try and see if it has any settings.

It does have an "automatic" mode, but it only works well with some DVDs. With others, it has a hard time recognizing the characters, depends on the picture.

 

Is that specific to SubRip or general to OCR?

 

Probably some software do a better job at recognizing the characters than others,but every DVD is different. If you want the best results, you have to put a little effort and enter a few characters.

Most times I just download the subs for the movies that I rip; if they are not synchronized I fix them, much faster . Only when I can't find them I rip them myself.

 

Do you really think synching subtitles is faster? They usually are out of sync in many places.

 

So far the only experience I had is that they were shifted to the right or left, coming up too slow or too fast. The shift was constant.
