Well, I've been steady at this for a couple years now and have built up a very large collection of DVDs. What I've been doing is put my backups in standard black cases then print and insert the cover art like that...but now I'm running out of room. I'm wondering how you guys store your dvds because my girlfriend is getting tired almost tripping over the huge stacks of cases I've got piled up. I suppose I'm tired of that too though. Anyway, if you managed to do something creative with how you store yours please post a picture if you can.

Dvds in standard black boxes, space is space. Short of a new larger apartment with a room dedicated to dvd storage, I don't know. I feel for ya buddy as I have the same problem.

Yea, using paper sleeves or a binder would definately save me a lot of space around here. Another thing I have been thinking about while it is unrelated to the space issue is the organization of my collection. Are there any programs out there for the computer that you all recommend for cataloging DVDs? A quick Google search I did found that there are a whole lot to choose from.

Another freebie for organising,games,movies,books etc (see link),as for space & being short on it,use what space you have above by utilising cabinets,how tall they are depends on your preference,the point is you've got available air space above you may as well use it,if you want to be able to see them without opening the doors have tinted glass style,you don't necessarily have to use free standing cabinets there's also storage hangable that screw to the wall with glass sliding doors etc

Thanks Scorp and blivet for the links to the free programs. Great ideas scrorp for using cabinets to house DVDs. I was thinking about this myself (some real talls shleves), but then I realized I'd run into the same problem but worse another year from now when I ran out of room in those shelves. What I think would be really cool was if there were semi hard plastic binder pages (or something like what I'm imagining) that had a pocket to insert the DVD cover art along with the disc. I haven't yet seen anything like that, but if you have please let me know where I can find it.

I use the same method as MysticE. I have several binder type cases with pages that hold 4 dvd's on the front and 4 on the back of each page that is zippered closed. Each case holds 400 discs. I can store 1000 discs easily in a tiny area about 1 1/2 feet squared. I don't keep cover pages for my backups as I already have the cover pages with my original discs. If all you want to have is a list of all your movies, just use Wordpad or some other word processor to create a list alphabetically.

Yea, I've got an alphabetical list already made but I prefer something that gives me more information then just the title. Collector is actually pretty good for that and my only qualm with it so far is that it didn't have in their data base a couple random movies I've got in my collection.

Wow!!! I'd guess about 40 lbs...

EDIT: Not back-breaking, but not just tossed around either... The most that I move them is unstacking one from on top of the other to access discs in the bottom case. I will be starting on my third one (600 capacity) in the next few months. When that one nears being full, I will order a third 900 - 1000 disc case and transfer those 500+ to that one.

i might go that route. I have binders but there not in order so its a bitch trying to dig up an older movie

The sleeves in my cases come numbered, so, they mesh perfectly with Ant Movie Catalog. The online catalogs are cool (I use DVDSpot as well), but when it comes to organizing movies, AMC and these cases are a match made in heaven... LOL

EDIT: I have well over 1600 movies, and I couldn't imagine trying to find one without AMC and the numbered sleeves. point-click-found ;-)

Nice movie collection you got there, I noticed we seen to have most of the same horror films.
How is "Bug" and "High Tension", I was thinking about picking these two up.
I'll be giving AMC a try.

In addition to the several 400 disc dvd binders that I have, might I suggest this. I have (2) 400 disc Sony dvd changers that hold, yes, 400 dvd's at once. You can also program the changer to know the title of each dvd that it holds in each slot. It will give you the slot # and the dvd title on-screen. You can easily search on-screen for a title in different genres (comedy, drama, horror, action etc.). It even plays cd's. This is a good storage method if you have 400 dvd's or less and you never have to remove the discs to watch them! Very reliable and has HDMI output as well.
