AutoGK is a pretty straight forward program:

Xvid4PSP is my personal Favorite:

Alot of people also like FairUse Wizard:

As for speed, that is going to depend all on your settings for each program as well as computer specs. None of these programs should take all day, with my computer (specs below), I can usually convert in about 2-3 hours (and my computer is not very fast). I personally like Xvid4PSP because of the range of options you have. You have many codecs as well as containers to choose from, and a range of filters that can be applied. If you are new to this, I would stick with Fairuse Wizard. Pretty straight forward, takes care of most of the options for you, and results are great.

Samsung SyncMaster 940BW 19" Widescreen Monitor via DVI, Coolermaster Centurion 5 case, Thermaltake 480 watt ps, Chaintech mobo, AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 San Diego Core @ 2.86 Ghz, XFX GeForce 6600GT AGP, 1 GB Kingston Hyper X PC3200 Dual Channel, 2x250 gig WD SATA, Soundblaster Audigy 4 soundcard, Sony DDU1615 (patched to Lite-On 16P1S) for ripping, NEC 3520A for burning

Encoder vs. Transcoder results:

I use dvdflick, also free, and a no brainer. Takes about 40 min. to do a normal movie. It comes with imgburn in it to burn with if you want. Or burn with your burning software, or put on hard drive.

Sorry miss read went the wrong way ( avi to dvd) disreguard this post. Sorry!!!!
I use dvdfab platium to do what you want, but its not free.
