I have downloaded a number of films and shows. The films are usually about 700mb in size (so I can burn 6 to a DVD).
Until now, I have watched them on a small screen - and the quality is OK. I use a cheap DIVX player,

However, I am in the market for a 42" plasma. Will the quality look bad on a screen that size?
Does anyone else watch DIVX films on a screen that size?

If the quality is bad - is there any way of boosting it?

I have a 40 inch lcd hdtv, and they look fine on mine. You can not increase quality no matter what you do. you could end up decreasing it.

It depends how good a job the person did of converting to .avi/.divx. I've got a 42" plasma, some look really good, some look like crap.

I thought that may be the case. I only download DVD rips which are all in AVI format, so hopefully they will look OK.

Is it possible to download HD films, which can then be played from the PC to the TV - and if so, do I need to update my graphics card (which currently only has a VHA output)? Would the VLC media player cope with HD format films too?

1.4GB rips look a LOT better, so look for those :)

I mean- if you can rip your own .avi file from a disc, that's even better.

There have been HD .avi releases- they're about 4GB. You might need a HDMI cable because HDMI and DVI will give better quality on a screen that size (~40"). VLC copes with everything, mate- even Matroska :)

Just stay away from most divx releases and get xvid releases. Most divx releases are very grainy and a waste of space.
