Archos 705 Video Problem

I am trying to download my ripped DVD files into the Archos 705 PVP. I bought all the plug-ins to allow me to play vob files. The original DVD files are in the vob (mpeg2) format. The Archos can now play mpeg2, mpeg4, and avi. The quality of the movies in the original vob format is very choppy and has poor audio sync. I tried to convert the files from vob to mpeg4 (at various bit rates from 2800 to 4000 kb/sec) but with only marginal improvement. Archos rep has been of no help. Can someone give me suggestions please? Thank you for any help.
