I dont know because the 9800X2 with 1024 has 2 processors and thats the point of SLI. But maybe putting the strain on 2 different cards is better for the processors and the RAM

Well It depends did you already buy a SLI motherboard. If so then i would definetly go with the two 9800GTX. And on the plus side you wont have one really huge card running really hot.

A pair of 9800GTXes will result in a higher performance level, but a higher power consumption and heat output than a single 9800GX2.

What about ATI? DO you think 2 HD3870 512 in crossfire or 1 3870 1024X2 would work better or give better performance for than the Nvidia cards? I want to make sure my graphics card doesn't become obsolete because that is the part of the computer that get outdated the quickest.

I use two 3870s in crossfire and really wish I didn't. Crossfire is dump, and the 3870 isn't all that on its own either. It's relatively fast but so unreliable you wouldn't believe. I've recommended ATI products over nvidia in most cases due to the superior image quality, but that only makes sense up to a point. Realistically you should avoid dual graphics altogether, both companies' methods are fraut with issues and it only means if you upgrade you have to spend even more money.
