Ok I have 6200 nvidea graphics, 2 gig of ram, I m not sure what else I have but I had an upgrade since the last time I ran quake. I just recently installed windows vista and I did have probs with the drivers for vista for my vid card. So I played around and found out that my css runs better with windows xp home drivers rather than the vista drivers. Played around some more and dl the drivers my comp recomended witch I have no idea is and dl a fix for the windows vista drivers for my specific vid card. so after I do all this I get this error message and I have no idea how to fix it. Should I reinstall the gay vista drivers?

Few other changes I noticed bout my pc that concern me. When I go to display and it say your montitor it used to say hp f150 or what ever model my monitor is. now is says some gerneric monitor. whats that?
and I dont have my nvidea control panel for my graphics card so I cant change any setting on my vid. card.
Plz reply back with any help.

I like the drivers I get now cause my fps in css is a lot better.. with vista I get like 34 with the drivers I have now I have 65. I am going to try reinstalling the vista drivers and see how that goes.
    Thanx

ok so I installed the vista drivers for my card from nvidia and its ok. My quake works and so does my other games but my freakin fps in counter strike is now 48 instead of 65. So I installed the windows zp drivers and quake again dont run and my fps in css is 63.. still not what I had with the drivers from the window catolog. Any suggestions advice or anything will help.

I'm going to start of by saying that you need to stop and think carefully about what you write and take it from someone else's standpoint of being able to understand it, as I did have quite a bit of trouble deciphering what you wrote. I don't mean to sound rude but it makes it alot easier for me to help you if you write clearly, as your post seemed to jump around alot...

My first question for you would be: What version of Quake are you trying to run?

And yes almost every game on earth is going to run better on XP than Vista as Vista uses alot more of your computers resources. Which brings up my next question: What Operating System are you running? As the drivers between XP and Vista are not interchangable (as far as I know).

Your computer should have no issues running either Counter Strike: Source or Quake... Although I have noticed issues trying to get Quake 1 to run on my laptop for whatever reason, so you maybe running into the same issues.

I'd love to help you solve your problem but I'm goning to need your help to and getting me as much clear, consice information as you can...

    Thank you.

You should use the driver that's for your OS. If you're using XP, don't use the drivers for Vista, and vice versa. Vista will give you a lower performance score than XP, especially if you're running the Aero desktop, and also especially with a weak card like the 6200. You might want to try turning that off.

First sammorris.. isnt something better than nothing?

engage16 Thank you and I will try to make it clear.

    1. I have windows vista Home premuim. I am currently running vista drivers from microsoft for my nvidea 6200. My css works good i get about 50-60fps. My quake 1.16 and .32 do not run.

    2. I tried xp drivers for my 6200 on vista OS. I can play all of my games with these drivers and it works ok. I get good fps in quake but in css I am getting about 40fps<-- which is my fav. game.

    3. I also tried vista driver for my 6200 from nvidea.. theese work like crap.. Quake runs with theese but I only get 20-30 fps in css with theese.

So out of those 3 things I am staying with the fist one. Miss my quake but I like the fps I get in css. Again I got theese drivers from microsoft catolog.

Below is the full error I got when I tried to run quake. Thanx for your help!

Ah, Could not load OpenGL subsystem, that's an error I'm very familiar with, it happens to me in Return to castle wolfenstein but not in Quake oddly. However, I've yet to find an answer to it I'm afraid...

I've run into issues running the original Quakeworld on some new computers also... Never have any problems running Q3 though... Sounds like a driver incompatbiltiy issue as the companies are starting to phase out 3dfx glide support, which was a base of the first 3 quake games... As for running Counter Strike Source, use the drivers that run best and tweak the ingame settings, maybe try running -dxlevel 81 as that may speed up performance greatly..

Indeed, the HD3870 doesn't support 3dfx glide any more, which is the issue. I can't run GLQuake, I have to use the old fashioned rendering method, whatever that is!

Are you saying the more I upgrade Im not likely to play quake? grrrr

I am fixing to upgrade again to a better motherboad, hard drive and prossesor, and graphics card gtx7800. Do you think I might be able to run quake then?

    thanx

I've never heard of anyone having issues running Quake 3... I occasionally get a crash because I run at 1280x800 which is the native resolution for my screen but is unnatural for Q3 to run...

So no, I don't believe that you'll have any issues, however don't quote me on that... Me and sammorris were referring to the original Quake 1 game and how we cannot play it in GL Rendering anymore because our video cards don't support it anymore...

As for being able to run Quake 3... Almost any machine out there can run it quite well, as its system requirements are very low... What your running into is probably a compatability issue. Most likey caused by Vista and/or their drivers...
