I got a xbox360 from a buddy who says its modded and that it cant go online, I was looking around and wanted to know if you can take the mod off? so I can use it to go online? I do know that it is not the chip mod, but the case has been opend up? if theres anyone that can tell me how to check what mod is on here and if I can take it off I would love it!
thanks for any info and support in advance.

it could depend on what drive is in there, but you're going to need a via6421 sata card first to be able to read the 360 drive.

theres no point of taking the mod off, if he says it cant go online, then it has been banned, and there is nothing you can do to fix that other than some seriously hard work with a very special chip that requires a non-banned xbox to steal some information off of. so just leave the mod on there, and have fun. also, the only mods that are out there are firmware flashes, or a chip on the dvd drive. to see which it is, just open up the dvd drive and if you see a chip then its been chipped, if you dont see one, then its been flashed.

i think he meant that his friend told him he shouldn't go on Xbox Live with it or he'll get banned, at least thats what I got from his post.
To me it seems like he's asking if he can restore his drive back to the original FW to play safely online, but I'm not sure.

doesnt matter, just leave it flashed, if he EVER played a burnt game on there, you have the same chance of being banned as if you flash it back to 'original.' this is because when he played his burnt game, and then played any other game on LIVE it sent the 'log' to MS and it has recorded that it played a burnt game and all the stuff that is in the xbox live, and burnt games = banning sticky at the top of the page. so as stated before, leave it flashed since it already is.

in order for us to tell you how to restore your xbox back to the stock firmware we are going to need:
1. what kind of dvd-drive is it?
this can be found here
2. You're going to have to find out what firmware is installed on the 360.
I'm not 100% on how exactly to restore original firmware, or if its possible if you don't have the original firmware, but at the very least you're going to have to tell us what drive and firmware you have?

the easiest solution would be to just leave it as is. you won't get banned playing originals online anyway.

right, but he will get banned for playing burnt games 'offline' as it logs all the information, and when you sign onto live to play an original game, everything gets sent to MS.

its not a firmware update, its either a game update, or a console update, either way you will have to do it to play on live, or that game perhaps. and you can play originals on live all you want, you can even play burnt games on live, its only a matter of time before you get banned since its flashed.
sorry for the double post, thought i hit edit button instead....

Why not purchases a second new shiny console for online gamming
Leave the firmware alone in other console so you play back-ups off line

sounds like a plan to me, i was going to get a new unit but then i was just thinking why not try to fix this one and save the 399 or what ever it is now and play this one, but i guess there no way, anyway to clear the old memory so when i log on it dont send all those reports?

Well i tried the xbox today just clearing all the memory off the unit (saved games, all gamer tags, any game content) and went to test the network and everything passed but xbox live, witch should be right because I never paid for anything and it gave me an error report and i saw in another thread that it says if the "Z:" line has a 1812-190 or something like it the its been banned. and thats what i popped up as, i talked to my buddy and asked him what was up he told that he never tried to go online and it was never banned. i guess he didn't know? but anywho thanks for all the info you guys game me ill be going out this weekend and getting another system to play online and then keep this one for backup games.
thanks again everyone take care.

sounds like your buddy might have scammed you.
There are people that will pay about $100 for banned consoles though
