I am looking at converting some 8mm tapes to DVD. I hope to build a new system Athlon XP or Athlon 64 later this year but thought I would try things out on my old PIII system first. The first thing I want to purchase is a second hard drive. There are two currently on sale. An 40 MB ATA/133 with 2MB cache and an 80 MB ATA/100 with 8MB cache. This drive would be dedicated solely to video files. My question is which is more important, the cache or the transfer type? Or should I just be patient and wait for an ATA/133 with 8MB cache?
Well I capture Fine useing a 160gb ATA/133 with 2mb cache, it is even a 5400rpm drive and I don"t have any problems captureing full resolution uncompressed AVI..But if you Have a P-3 then you Probably don"t have an ATA/133 IDE ,you Probably just have a ATA/66 or ATA/100 and a ATA/133 drive will only go as fast as your IDE Port...I got my 160gb Maxtor ATA/133 2mb Cache 5400RPM drive Brand new for $80 US which is half or a Third what you would Pay for a Simular Drive anywere else, I get all Of my Drives off of EBay and I get some Pretty great deals if I take the Time and Look for the best Deals ,You could get a simple 80gb drive For about $50 US..I even get some awesome deals on CPU"s & Motherboards ,Like a New Motherboard and an Athlon XP 2200+ for $99 US or I just Picked up some Intel 2.5ghz CPU"s with Good Motherboards with 8X AGP for $115 US which is cheaper than the chip Costs retail..when you are ready to upgrade let me Know and I can set you up with the guy i get most of my CPU/Mobo Combo"s from as I Build PC"s and sell them and I can put together a whole 2.5ghz PC for about $350 US with all Brand new Parts...Cheers
Thanks for the input. Since I will port this drive to a new system sometime in the future, I will eventually have a ATA/133 interface available. Yes for now I'm stuck with ATA/66. There are some killer sales out there right now I'm tempted to take advantage of.
