Slim PS2 HD issue.

Hey.
Im going mad trying to get this to work.

What I have.

PS2 slim v13
Matrix infinity chip.
HD combo. (plastic HD case with ribbon cables)
Maxtor diamondmax plus 9 6y080l0422611

What I have tried.
HD advanced 3 wants to re format the HDD every time.
WINHIIP has formatted the drive as toxic OS and reports no errors.
I install ps2 menu with matrix installer CD. It says all is fine.
Hold l1 to boot boot.elf and I get a gray screen with HDD not formated properly in the bottom left

Please any advice would be appreciated. Im about to explode from frustration.

Correction,
Formatted as HDL28bit.
Managed to rip a game from retail DVD to HD.
Winhiip says all is fine but the PS2 still wants to format the drive.
