I'd like to back up my DVD collection to blu-ray, and after some experiments, I'm wondering if the best way to go would be using a super-resolution application (such as Video Enhancer by the deemon) to upconvert to 720p, and encoding that to blu-ray avc. The problem is with the blu-ray SD spec. It supports 720x480, but only in 29.976 fps. This doesn't encode well (to say the least) into avc, because its usually telecined using 2:3 pulldown. If we do an inverse telecine, we get ~24 fps, but this isn't in the blu-ray spec. However, 720p24 is supported in the blu-ray spec. I wouldn't normally consider encoding up-converted video, but super-resolution is different than other scaling methods in that it uses a number of frames to recover 'hidden' detail. (Yes, this really does work... I at least can tell the difference between super-resolution and normal upscaling methods.) Can anyone think of a better way to backup DVD to blu-ray AVC? (Compatable with blu-ray players.)
