I'm not sure where to start with this whole thing, so here goes. The HP DVD burner I've had for 2+ years stopped burning a couple of weeks ago. Thinking I might have had some bad discs or the burner itself was bad I picked up a new set of discs and a new burner. Ran some tests with the new discs first and everything failed. Reading here (thanks to all) I found the discs are bought are not recommended. So I picked up some Verbatim (these are usually good right?) and tried again with the original drive. It continued to fail so I replaced it with a new Pioneer 1910-LS and tried to burn. It failed also. I've checked my DMA settings, tried the ASPI drivers, and set my burn speed to 8x but nothing seems to work. Should I take the driver back as defective? Your log indicates a PIONEER DVR-113NP...which is obviously the very latest as I cannot find ANYTHING on it.
Hmmm, that is correct. I was reading off the box. So firmware of 1.0 is the latest? A quick Google search didn't turn anything up...
2 on Sata, 1 ide the ST3120023A is on the secondary ide (I believe) Yeap, the drive actually tries to burn, but usually quits on writing lead in, sometimes it burns a little then stops. Any thoughts on the ide drivers to use? Will get one and post it (the machine is off right now).
Latest updates: I can burn CD-RWs ok. Cannot burn a data DVD though. Pic of my ide settings included.
Latest update: Just burned data to a DVD with my orginial HP burner successfully. Starting to look like the machine is messed up. Any thoughts or software configuration or hardware? Motherboard? PSU? TIA, -derry
Ok, after I got the burner working in another machine I put it back in the original machine and unplugged everything but the keyboard, mouse, monitor, necessary hdd, and fans. Burnt a data DVD no problems. Will be trying a video DVD later and post the results. Starting to look like some device(s) is causing problems. Oh, and the blank was a Memorex!
its deffo configuration somewhere... 2 things my SATA controllers for my 6x hard drives are is SCSI/raid (i have dual raid motherboard) yours are in IDE listings??? my IDE controllers are in the ide list but i have the motherboard drivers loaded, you dont your useing default standard drivers from M$ look for drivers on the makers website for IDE/Nvidia Nforce of the mobo. maybe this will sort it out. mine were default M$ till i installed motherboards own. ----------------- ok taking above onboard, you have an IDE hard drive aswell, i do not all mine are SATA so maybe the ide HD is causing hassle? or your motherboard BIOS isnt setup right to boot both? or it is and its not gelling together well? -----------------
Latest: Video burned work (on Memorex disc!!!). Starting to think I might have gotten 2 bad batches of blank discs... Verbatim & Memorex... Any suggestions on where to buy the best blanks? Last 2 purchases were from BestBuy. Plan on starting to hook things back up to the machine and run tests. Also will look into configuration, specifically the items Rotary noted.
Ok, I installed the nVidia 6.86 drivers and nothing changed in the config! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? What versions of the drivers do you have installed?
im still on old v6.65 (installing these takes out M$ defaults) also go here to see what you have there, follow this carefully: device manager / standard dual channel ide / update driver tab / update driver button / welcome to the hardware update wizard popups up - use link: "no, not at this time" then press next / then use: install from a list or specific location - press next / then use: Dont search, i will choose the driver to install - press next / now you see what drivers you have installed i have both but only useing 1 at top the other in list LIKE YOURS is the deafult microsoft drivers... if your nvidia is in there click it and use it. also to note you are useing multi word DMA 2 mine are ULTRA DMA 2 and 4 (the highest transfer speed possible) yuor primary / secondary / standard dual channel are default microsofts that are used for OS to get driver cds installed now these may work by there self but you may need to add an ASPI layer, try forceASPI and see if you burn better? and try upping to ultra dma, (check your bios for drives) my bios in second picture is let bios auto detect drives but mine are nvidia drivers installed not M$ defaults.. what is the full make / model of your motherboard with numbers etc so i can go look at the downloads section!
Thanks for staying with me on this one Rotary. It's very much appreciated and if you're in the Chicago area I'll buy you a drink sometime. Quick update, I installed the 6.53 nForce drivers. These are the ones that came with the Epox 9NPA+SLi board. Link I then upgraded to the 6.86 drivers. While they SATA drives still show up under the IDE section instead of the SCSI/RAID section, I can set the DMA up to the 'Ultra' modes now. I'm off to pick up some blank DVDs (don't trust any of the ones I have now); will try the things you mentioned in the last reply later and let you know the results.
Brand new blank Sony DVD +RW discs and Nero reports 'no disc inserted'. Now I had flashed the drive to HP720b (HI24 firmware) and this is a 740i drive (need to get the OEM type). So I updated the firmware to HJ24 (latest I could find) and still get the 'no disc inserted' message (even though there is one). Any ideas? Thanks in advance, -dd
hmm while i read and think, RW isnt a good disc for testing on drives an -R or +R may of been better... thinking... ----------- does the drive do anyhting? like play a cd or play an original dvd? do those things i mentioned above and see how it goes... also tell me what you have for the first picture i have the 2 drivers there... ----------- on your downloads link did you install: 1, intel chipset software utility full? ----------- does your mobo have VIA or SIS chipsets on board? ----------- i cant seem to find any drivers at all??? must be doing something wrong
CDs play (Moby 'South Side'), DVDs play (Office Space) but no sound (perhaps a symptom?), plays CDs burned (vinyl I've converted to digital), plays DVDs burned (record TV) and plays sounds. Only played an old DVD I burned; one I burned recently (past month) does not play! The newer burned DVDs play on another machine fine. The board has the SiS chipset, but I'm not using it. I have my SATA drives on the nForce ports. I have some -R or +R discs, but wasn't trusting them after so many problems. I didn't download the intel drivers, it's an AMD board. thats the baby use that top driver in that window! no sound on dvd? try useing VLC player if still no sound could be codecs or audio cable on dvd drive? or pc set to 5.1 sound or 2.1 sound? as music cds play sound.

Is it an unsupported mode by the burner? Should I let the BIOS select the mode? This is a 740i, could the fact a firmware update changed it to a 740b be a problem? The firmware is HJ24, latest for the 740 series (AFAIK).
